GoldDust Field Trips: Community, Learning, and Real-World Jewellery Insight
GoldDust Field Trips are one of the most valued parts of GoldDust Collective. They are designed as in-person visits to key spaces within the jewellery and wider creative industry, giving members direct access to the people, environments, and processes that shape how the sector actually works.
These trips are open to all GoldDust members and sit at the heart of what the Collective is building: a connected, informed, and supportive community of independent jewellers who learn as much from each other as they do from the industry experts they meet along the way.
At their core, Field Trips are about three things: real-world learning, peer connection, and seeing the jewellery industry from the inside.
They are also a more relaxed, human version of networking. Less formal introductions are usually less intimidating! The focus is on conversation, observation, and genuine connection rather than ‘saying the right thing’ or pitching. And with so much going on during the Field Trips, it’s easy to find lots to talk about with your fellow jewellers.
A growing series of visits
Previous GoldDust Field Trips have included visits to:
Liberty in London, exploring one of London’s most iconic department stores and its curated fine jewellery selection
The Responsible Casting Company, gaining insight into ethical production, casting processes, and responsible manufacturing within the jewellery supply chain
Dover Street Market in London, experiencing a highly directional retail environment where fashion, art, and jewellery intersect
Each location is chosen to offer a different perspective on the industry, whether that is retail curation, production ethics, or avant-garde commercial positioning.
What happens on a Field Trip
Every visit is slightly different, but the idea is consistent. Members are given access to behind-the-scenes insights, often directly from founders, buyers, designers, or production specialists. These conversations tend to cover topics such as:
How buying decisions are made in real retail environments
What makes a jewellery brand commercially viable for stockists
How production and sourcing decisions affect pricing and positioning
What current customers are responding to in real time
Alongside structured talks or tours, there is always time to explore, ask questions, and observe how the space functions in practice.

While the learning is important, the most consistent value often comes from the group itself.
Field Trips create a rare opportunity for independent jewellers to meet in person, many for the first time, and to connect outside of screens, emails, and social media. Conversations move quickly from practical challenges to shared experiences, and the chat is open, informal, and supportive.
It is networking, but without the pressure that often comes with it. More accurately, it is community building in a real-world setting.
GoldDust Collective Field Trip: Aetla, Edinburgh
Most recently, members travelled to Edinburgh to visit Aetla for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour with founder and head buyer Keira.
This visit offered a detailed look at how a fine jewellery boutique is curated, including how buying decisions are made, which designers stand out to a retailer, and what styles are currently performing well in-store.
Members gained insight into:
How buyers assess and select independent jewellery brands
What influences wholesale purchasing decisions
How curation shapes a boutique’s identity
The realities of stocking and selling fine jewellery in a competitive market
The setting itself reflected the same level of considered curation discussed in the session: a light-filled, elegant space with a tightly edited selection of fine, fashion, art, and antique jewellery.
As with all Field Trips, the value extended beyond the formal talk. Time spent together as a group allowed for discussion, comparison, and shared reflection on how these insights apply to each individual business.
Why Field Trips matter
Independent jewellers often operate in isolation, which can make it difficult to make decisions or understand how work is perceived in a commercial context.
Field Trips provide a direct line into that reality. Seeing how jewellery is bought, sold, and presented in different environments helps sharpen decision-making and gives designers a clearer sense of where their work sits in the wider market. Most importantly; seeing things in real life makes all the difference, taking it offline and out into the real world in a real life context. There’s only su much strategy and learning you can get at your desk.
Just as importantly, these in-person meet-ups are about connection. The relationships formed between members often become an ongoing source of support, advice, and collaboration long after the visit ends.
Looking ahead
The GoldDust Field Trips will continue to evolve as the Collective grows, with future visits shaped by both industry relevance and member interest.
Suggestions are always welcome, particularly from members who know of spaces, studios, or retailers that would offer valuable insight into how the jewellery industry operates from the inside. I’m always open to your suggestions! Just drop me a DM over on Instagram.
